More than 500 people stood in the biting wind on Saturday to condemn the January 7th killing of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.  Many of them had seen online video footage of the killing and were appalled; they said they were even more appalled by the misinformation and callous name-calling by the Trump administration and by some Minnesota Republicans.  Though the protest was peaceful, a sense of injustice roiled through the crowd as they waved signs up and down all four corners of the intersection of Main Street and Broadway. The protest was organized at short notice by the Winona Rapid Response Team.  Dwayne Voegli, a member of the Response Team, called it a “wonderful celebration of democracy.  Instead of a small group of people gathered on short notice, our vigil grew into a large rally.”  Dan Wilson, local farmer and candidate who is running to unseat Winona’s House Representative Aaron Repinski, said “The shooting, and the Republican response, shows the stakes of the coming election in November. The current Republican administration is demanding that we not believe our own eyes as they continue to claim that Renee Good is a ‘domestic terrorist.’“  Winona writer Jerome Christianson commented later on his website that “When elected officials and government agents forget their oath to “preserve and protect” the Constitution, it’s up to the people, and on Saturday, the people did not fail.”
