President Joe Biden entered office with a large goal: provide relief for millions of folks with enough debt to keep them from moving forward. Buying a home, having kids, contributing to their community: none of these were possible with the grueling debt many suffer.
The Democrats at the state and national level had a simple plan. Give this set of Americans a break: cancel a helpful amount of debt for those who needed it most.
The reasoning is strong: With less debt, these folks can enter new economic opportunities, start businesses, and become consumers and citizens that aren’t living paycheck to paycheck or working more than one job. It has been proven that student debt is a drag on the economy. Broad forgiveness would help American families while boosting GDP. With even the small proposed relief of $10,000 of debt, American families would benefit greatly.
But Republicans have stopped, blocked, and exploded this common sense economic relief and family relief at every turn. What’s more, Republicans have decided to engage in a culture war on college graduates, demonizing help for these voters who are simply citizens with the same problems as veterans, farmers, and other hard-working Americans.
So why are Joe Biden and the Democrats not to blame for the loss of debt relief?
In 2021 Joe Biden had a clear path to helping Americans and their families. However, a dubious legal challenge was concocted by Republican organizations not even affected by Biden’s relief plan. This dubious legal case was accepted in part by Republican-chosen Supreme Court Justices, who killed even a slice of debt relief for Americans. The decision outraged the legal community, but Republicans got what they wanted: they killed relief for those who couldn’t afford college without loans in the first place.
Go vote on November 5th. Remember that Republican politicians and judges stopped debt relief for millions of Americans.
If you care about American families making it, be a Democratic voter this November.
